The Challenge

A beloved bakery with a storefront that couldn't keep up with the season.

For more than 35 years, Caluda's has been one of New Orleans' most beloved king cake bakeries — a father-and-son operation baking out of a 10,000-square-foot bakery in Harahan and shipping nationwide. Chef John Caluda, a Culinary Institute of America graduate and former Royal Orleans pastry chef, started selling king cakes in 1990; today he and his son Josh ship their traditional and specialty cakes to customers across the country.

But king cake is a fiercely seasonal business. The vast majority of demand arrives in a compressed window between Twelfth Night and Mardi Gras — most of it on mobile, much of it from out-of-state customers who grew up on Caluda's and now want it delivered to their door. Every extra second of load time and every point of checkout friction costs orders precisely when traffic and revenue peak.

That's exactly where their old store fell short. Caluda's was running on Magento, and it couldn't take the pressure — heavy, slow to load, and unreliable, it kept going down in high season when traffic spiked and every hour offline meant lost orders. They needed a brand-new store that could carry the load: modern, fast, easy to buy from, and dependable when it mattered most — built and launched quickly, before the season arrived.

The Approach

Ecommerce done right — rebuilt for speed, clarity, and peak-season load.

We rebuilt Caluda's on Shopify Plus with one goal in mind: make it effortless to order king cake from a phone, and make the store fast and resilient enough to handle the Mardi Gras surge without missing a sale.

1

Performance first

We rebuilt the front end around Core Web Vitals — trimming render-blocking scripts, optimizing imagery, and tuning the theme until mobile largest-contentful-paint landed at 1.2 seconds. Fast pages keep shoppers moving toward checkout.

2

A storefront that sells the craft

A clean, photography-forward design that puts the cakes front and center, makes flavors easy to browse, and tells the Caluda's story — 35 years, award-winning recipes, baked fresh in New Orleans — right where it builds trust.

3

Conversion, engineered

We streamlined the path to purchase: clearer product pages, simpler flavor and shipping selection, stronger trust signals, and a faster, lower-friction checkout — the work behind a 120% lift in conversion.

4

Built for the rush

King cake season is a sprint. We set the store up to handle concentrated peak traffic, nationwide shipping, and gifting — so the busiest weeks of the year run smoothly instead of straining the site.

Mara did an amazing job! I needed a brand new store built, quick, like real quick. I really did not expect her to be able to do it in such a short time frame, but she got it done. We love our new site, and will definitely be working with her again.
